Top TMT Bars for Construction of Residential Buildings

Modern-day house construction is fundamentally different from older brick-and-mortar construction which did not take into account factors such as earthquakes and fire hazards. To mitigate damage from such forces of nature and enhance the longevity of structures, modern construction utilizes TMT bars.

TMT bars are thermo mechanically treated steel construction bars that have a tough outer core and soft inner core. They have high strength, ductility, malleability and workability. When used with concrete, they provide significant structural strength to buildings and enhance their load bearing capacity. They also help buildings withstand shock and vibrations from seismic activity and temperatures of up to 600 degree celsius.

TMT bars are of different grades depending upon the level of stress that must be applied to them to deform them. The commonly used grades of TMT bars in India are - Fe-415/500/550, Fe-415D, Fe500D, Fe550D, and Fe-600.

The “Fe” in the name represents iron and the numerical figure expresses the minimum yield stress in MPa. Higher grade bars are stronger than lower grade bars. In house construction, higher grade bars should be used for load bearing components such as main walls and beams, whereas lower grade bars can be used for non-load bearing components such as walls that separate rooms.

In general, Fe-500 and Fe-500D are the most preferred TMT bar grades for use in house construction. They have excellent tensile strength, yield strength, thermal conductivity, ductility and durability, which makes them suitable for any kind of civil construction. Opting for either or these two grades of TMT bars would ensure that housing structures have the ideal balance of strength and flexibility.
